VIDEO: Skiing the Hardrock 100

The epic Colorado loop, as it's never been experienced before

In March, four athletes took on an unusual challenge: skiing the snow-covered course of the Hardrock 100 Endurance Run, a 100-mile trail race that takes place in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado.

The team consisted of elite ultrarunners Jason Schlarb and Paul Hamilton; pro ski-mountaineer Scott Simmons; and skier and filmmaker Noah Howell. (Schlarb would go on to tie for first at the actual Hardrock race, in July.)

This film documents the four-day adventure, which included river crossings, ill-fitting boots, an unexpected crevasse and a traverse across frozen water falls as well as miles and miles of skiing challenging, beautiful backcountry lines. It was the first known winter completion of the 100-mile course.

The project, filmed and edited by Howell, was released by Schlarb-Wolf Productions, the adventure-film production company of Schlarb and fellow ultrarunner Jeremy Wolf.
