The Flyathlon is a new multi-sport event that integrates three activities that are currently surging in popularity in the Western U.S.; trailrunning, fly fishing, and craft beer. While many enjoy these activities independently, we have found over the last several years that putting them together is even more enjoyable. Simply put, many of the best and most beautiful places to fish are way back in the woods, and the quickest way to get back to these remote places to maximize fishing time is to trail run. And once you have run back from that mountain lake or stream, all of that effort is rewarded with high quality, local craft beer.
After an awesome inaugural event in 2016, we are bringing this event back for 2017. This is an out-and-back 10-miles (total) course that runs through Gateview Canyon from BLM’s Red Bridge campground to the NPS’s Gateview campground along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. While there are no native trout in the Lake Fork, browns and rainbows are plentiful, and documented to grow bigger than 20 inches.
The rules of the Flyathlon are very simple. During the run, you must catch a fish and photograph it on the ruler on your race bib. The time it takes you to complete the course is then adjusted by the size and species of the fish that you captured, with a double bonus for a native fish. However, since there are no native fish in the Lake Fork, bigger is better.
There are a variety of strategies that can be employed in the Flyathlon. Break away early and get the fishing out of the way before others fish the same waters. Crush the run and then focus on the fishing later... The possibilities are endless.
