Weekend Race Recap Run Down - Page 2
Ray Miller 50/50
In the more consistently sunny Santa Monica Mountains of Point Mugu State Park in southern California, the Ray Miller 50 Miler also took place over the weekend. The race honors Ray Miller, or "Ranger Ray" as he was known, who lived and volunteered year-round in the park for many years.
The men’s race went to Dylan Bowman of Aspen, Colorado, after a hard fought battle with former Pearl Izumi teammate and eventual second place finisher, Timothy Olson of Ashland, Oregon. Bowman’s finish time (6:47) was two minutes shy of the course record set by Jorge Maravilla in the race’s inaugural running. Hal Koerner, 37, took third in 7:17. The women’s winner was Amy Sproston, 38, who finished in 8:38. Second place went to Stephanie Weigel, 31 (9:11), followed by Clare Abram, 42 (9:31) in third.
Jed Smith Ultra Classic 50 Miler
Almost 400 miles north in Sacramento, California, the 35th annual Jed Smith Ultra Classic saw a new route that included a bit more asphalt and a bit less dirt than runners were used to. Amy Halseth, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, ran 6:19 to claim first in the women’s race and second overall. Her run brought her within 38 seconds of Meghan Arbogast’s record-setting race last year. Julie Fingar, of Granite Bay, California, race director of the Sierra Nevada Endurance Runs, trailed Halseth, crossing the line in second with a time of 7:05. Kathrine Plichta, of Redwood City, California, was a close third in 7:09. The men’s winner was Victor Ballesteros of San Rafael, California. Chad Worthen, of Sacramento was second (6:47), and Jeremy Nye, also from Sacramento, finished third (7:26).
